As designers, all around lovers of pretty things, and big eaters, the holidays are an especially exciting time for us. Because Thanksgiving revolves almost solely around the dining room table, this is where we focused the majority of our designing efforts. A beautiful tablescape will set the mood for your Thanksgiving, creating the perfect environment for your family and friends to stuff their faces in.
We spent this Thanksgiving at Maddy’s parents house in Malibu Canyon. The woodsy, cozy, yet glam setting inspired our tablescape theme - rustic causal green and gold glam.
Quick tip: choosing a theme for your tablescape makes decorating much easier. Remember that you can make up any theme you want, even if it isn’t “traditional” for that specific holiday.
The first step we took was to take stock of what pieces we already had that worked with the theme. We had the green, gold and white plates, classic silverware, linen and lace napkins, crystal ware, and select candle votives and holders.
The second step was to decide what we needed to complete the theme. Right off the bat we knew we needed a table runner, candles, florals, and placemats. The rest we would just improvise in store.
To shop for our needs we decided to go to one of our faithful favorites Cost Plus World Market. World Market has a large selection of items and styles, as well as excellent prices and sales. Unless you are planning to spend the big bucks on your table setting, we highly recommend going to stores like World Market, Target, etc.
Quick tip: don’t be afraid to over buy at the store, it’s better to have too much than too little in decorating terms, and you can always return anything you don’t use. We always have lots of leftover pieces to return.
At World Market we picked up place mats, mason jars, votives, and candles. For the table runner we ordered a roll of classic butcher paper on Amazon, and for the florals we went to the downtown LA Flower Mart.
When we set up our table we like to think of it in layers. The first layer is your necessities (i.e. table runner, place settings, etc.). The second layer is centerpiece florals, the third layer is centerpiece candles, and so on. With each layer you put on the table take a step back to see what you're missing. Whatever you’re missing is your next layer, and so on. Before you know it, you’ll step back and the tablescape will be complete!
