Christmas in Southern California is admittedly a bit sad. It's usually in the mid seventies and sunny, with a zero percent chance of snow...ever. We put lights on the trunks of our palm trees and go for a Christmas day walk on the beach, nothing about our holiday season is "traditional".
Feeling slightly forlorned, I decided to create my own "traditional" Christmas here in California. For a decor theme I chose color and glitter. I know this sounds vague, but it actually came together quite well, and gave me endless options while shopping.
I love, love, loveeeee ornaments. I've been collecting them for a few years now, and have quite a sizable and varied collection. My favorite place to shop for ornaments is World Market. They have an endless variety for very affordable prices. Although I'm fond of each very different ornament's look, I didn't want my tree to look crazy cluttered. To create some uniformity in the tree I bought two different solid colors of classic round ball ornaments at Michaels and hung them between all my non-traditional ornaments. I also found some amazing glittered tinsel garland at Michaels that I wrapped around the entire tree. Try mixing traditional decorations with non-traditional ones, they will serve as a perfect uniform base to create a cohesive, yet crazy holiday space.
Quick tip: Hang your larger and different ornaments first to space them out evenly, after those are hung you can fill in with your matching and smaller ornaments. This will make your tree look even and balanced.
For the rest of the room I filled in various surfaces with more colorful decor. Bottle brush trees from Target, nutcrackers from World Market, faux garland from Home Depot, and glittered accessories from Michaels to tie it all together.
Quick tip: If you don't have that traditional fireplace to hang your garland and stockings try hanging everything on your TV credenza. It works just as well and really ties the whole room together!
